PREFACE.

THE object of the following work is, to afford practical assistance to the student of Chinese. All theoretical disquisition respecting the nature of the language has been purposely omitted. On this subject much has already been said; but, as yet, in our language, little practical assistance has been afforded to the student. It is hoped that this grammar will, in some degree, supply the defect. And, as it is the first work of the king in English, and treats of a language little known to Europeans, it will, with the judicious, meet with every suitable allowance.
