Preface.

Two classes were in view during the preparation of the book: (1) Christian missionaries, for whom a good knowledge of Chinese is indispensable; and (2) those engaged in administering British justice to Hakkas living under British rule. In recent times another class has arisen, to whom such a book should be useful— Hakkas wishing to learn English. It is hoped that all these will derive some benefit from the following pages.
