WAR AGAINST JAPAN

The war against Japan is presented on a map based on the Mercator projection, in which latitudes and longitudes appear at right angles. The scale varies according to distance from the equator. The distortion caused by scale variation is made apparent by the red grid, in which lines are drawn at 500-mile intervals, Tokyo being used as a zero point. Comparison with the 500-mile intervals on the opposite page accentuates the great distances involved in the Pacific.
