He was b. April 18, 1802, and succeeded his father, Oct. 7, 1848; his lordship, a distinguished statesman, literary and philanthropic gentleman, was appointed Chief Secretary of Ireland in 1835, and held that office until 1841 ; was a Chief Commissioner of Woods and Forests, 1846-50 ; Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1850-2; Lord Lieut, of Ireland, 1855-8, and was re-appointed in 1859, which office he held until he retired into private life in consequence of ill-health, 1864 ; and d. unmarried Dec. 5, of that year.
