CHARLEMONT, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his uncle, Francis William, K.P. 2nd Earl of Charlemont. He was b. Jan. 3, 17/5 $ succeeded his father, Aug. 4, 1799; was a Representative Peer for Ireland, and was, in 1837, raised to the peerage of the United Kingdom: i.Feb. 9, 1802, Anne, daughter of W. Bermingham, Esq. of Ross- hill; and d. Dec. 26, 1863, having had issue two sons and two daughters, who all pre- deceased him. He was the last of the Irish Peers elected at the Union of Ireland _with Great Britain, in 1801, and sat in the House of Lords for over sixty-two years. He also sat in both Houses of Parliament. Grenadier Guards, 1845, Lieut, and Capt. 1850, Major, 1855, Capt. and Lieut.-Col. 1857, Lieut.-Col. 95th Foot, 1858, and Col. 1863; served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea.and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol ; has the Crimean medal and clasp, the Sardinian and Turkish war medals, and the Order of the Medjidie. Served in the Indian Mutiny with the 95th Foot, and has the Indian medal ; was Acting Dep. Adj. -Gen. at Bombay, I860, and in the Abyssinian war, 18678 ; and was Adj. -Gen. of the Bengal Army, 186s 70, made a C.B. and Aide-de-Camp to the Queen, 1868 : m. 1867, Adria Fanny, daughter of Major-Gen.
