COMBERMERE, Viscount, His lordship's predecessor was bis father, Sir Stapleton. Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere, G.C.B. G.C.H. K.S.I. 5.1772; educated at Westminster. Entered the Army in 1791, as Lieut. Welsh Fusiliers, was shortly afterwards promoted to a Cavalry Regiment; served with the Duke of York in Flanders, 1793-4 ; afterwards at the Cape, and at Madras, where he was engaged against Tippoo Saib. On his return he commanded a Regiment in Ireland for three years, when he was placed on the Staff in England. Was sent, in 1808, with a Brigade to Portugal ; was present at Talavera, and at each subsequent action throughout the Peninsular war, during a portion of which time he was Commander-in Chief of the Cavalry. Was second in command to Wellington at Salamanca, after which battle, as also after Talavera, he received the unanimous thanks of Parliament ; at the close of the campaign he received the Order of the Bath, and was again thanked by Parliament, in conjunction with Wellington ; in 1813, was appointed to the command of the 20th Dragoons, and received the Order of the Tower and Sword of Portugal ; and of St. Ferdinand of Spain; in 1814, he was created Baron Combermere ; in 1817, he was chosen Governor of Barbados, and Command er-in-Chief in the West Indies, and in 1822, Commander-in -Chief in Ireland, and in 1825 Commander-in-Chief in Bengal, and for his services at the siege of Bhurtpore, he was, in 1826, elevated to the Viscountcy. Ho was afterwards Colonel of the 1st Life Guards, Gold Stick -in- Wai ting, Constable of the Tower of London, Lord Lieut, of the Tower Hamlets, a Field Marshal in the Army, and a Governor of the Royal Military Asylum. His lordship m. 1st, Jan. 1, 1801, Anne, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Newcastle, (she d. 1807), having issue, three sons ; 2ndly, June 18, 1814, Caroline, daughter of W. F. Greville, Esq. (she d. JSS?), having issue a son and two daughters ; 3rdly, 1838, Mary Woolley, daughter of Robert Gibbings, Esq. He d. Feb. 1865* without issue from his last marriage.
