Kingdom, and by his sagacious seamanship and daring gallantry gained a name inferior'to none of the naval commanders of his age ; among his most brilliant achievements in the Royal Navy was the burning of the French fleet i , the Basque Roads, April 11, 1809, and the capture, by boarding, of the Spanish frigate " El Gamo " of 32 guns and 319 men, with the brig " Speedy" of 158 tons and 54 men ; the Spanish captain and 53 of his men being killed during the fight. In 1821, he commanded the fleets of Chili and Peru in the war of their independence, and entirely destroyed the Spanish fleet in the Pacific. In 1825, 1 e commanded the Brazilian fleet in the Brazilian war of independence, and was completely successful. He subsequently commanded the Greek Navy. In Brazil he was created a Marquess, and has received many foreign orders and decorations of every distinction. He m. Aug. 8, 1812, Katherine Corbet, daughter of Thomas Barnes, Esq., and d.
