HAKDWICKE, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Charles Philip, P.C., LL.D., D.C.L., 3rd Earl of Hardwicke. He was b. April 2, 1799, and succeeded his uncle 1834 ; educated at Harrow. Entered the Navy 1815, served at the bombardment of Algiers 1816, became Capt. 1825, Rear- Admiral 1858, Vice- Admiral 1863. Was Lord Lieut, of Cambridgeshire. Sat as M.P. for Reigate 1831, and for Cambridgeshire 18314 ; was Postmaster General 1852, Lord Privy Seal 1858 9, and sometime a Lord in Waiting to the Queen; made an Hon. LL.D. of Cambridge 1843, and an Hon. D.C.L. of Oxford 1853. He m. 1833, the Hon. Susan Liddell, 6th daughter of the 1st Baron Ravensworth, and d. Sept. 1873, leaving issue four sons and three daughters. HARDWICKE, SUSAN, Countess of, 6th daughter of the 1st Baron Ravensworth; m. 1833, the 4th Earl of Hardwicke, who d. 1873. HENRY THYNNE LASCELLES, 4th Earl. Born June 18th, 1824; succeeded his fa- ther in 1857 ; educated at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford ; is a Dep. Lieut, of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and was sometime Lieut.-Col. of the West Riding Hussars, resigned, 1870, but retains his rank by Royal permission : married (1845) Lady Elizabeth Joan De Burgh, eldest daughter of the 1st Marquess of Clan- ricarde, K.P. (this lady died, 1854), and has issue, living, Sons, Henry Ulick, Viscount Lascelles, b. 1846 ; was educated at Eton; entered the Grenadier Guards, 1865, became Lieut, and Capt. 1869, retired 1871, in which year he became Capt. in the Yorkshire Hussar Yeomanry Cavalry.
