LATJDEEDALE, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his cousin, Anthony, G.C.B. K.C.M.G. 10th Earl of Lauderdale, b. June 10, 1785 ; succeeded his brother, Aug. 22, I860 ; he was an Admiral of the Red, and d. unmarried, March 22, 1863. Born 1811 ; was educated at Foyle College, and at Haileybury; entered the Bengal Civil Service, 1828 ; was Assistant to the Chief Commissioner of Delhi, 1831 6, Magistrate and Collector at Delhi, 183646, Commissioner of the Seconder Daab, 1846, Member of the Board of Administration for the Punjaub, 1849 52, Chief Commissioner, 18528, the first Lieut. -Governor of the province, 18589, and Viceroy of India, 18648. Made a K.C.B. 1856, and a G.C.B. 1857 ; received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, 1859 ; appointed a Member of the Council of India, 1858; created Hon. D.C.L. of Oxford, and Hon. LL.D. of Cambridge, and of Dublin, 1859; was Chairman of the London School Board 1870 3 : married (1841) Harriet Catherine, daughter of the Rev.
