Erskine Goodeve-Erskine, of South Barrow, Bromley, Kent, who was son of the late William James Goodeve, Esq., of Clifton, by Lady Frances Jemima Erskine, sister of the 32nd Earl. In 1866 upon the death of his uncle, John Francis Miller Erskine, 9th Earl of Mar and llth Earl of Kellie, Mr. Goodeve-Erskine assumed the title of Earl of Mar, and his right to such rank was admitted by the authorities of Scotland. The title was, however, claimed by the 12th Earl of Kellie, and after his death by the 13th Earl, to whom in Feb. 1875, the Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords adjudged the Earldom. In explanation of Mr. Goodeve-Erskine' s continued assumption of the title, the Editor of " Debrett" under the peculiar circumstances of the case, thinks it desirable to print the following protest, that has been published by that gentleman : " The Heir of line of the ancient Earldom of Mar has been advised and humbly submits, with deference to the authority which the Committee for Privileges seeks to assume, that for the following reasons the Committee has no power to extinguish the old Earldom.
