Compound Sounds. Among the consonants attention may be cald to the affricate ds, as in judge (dsAds), and its voiceless mate t$, as in church (t$B:zt$).
Among the vowels may be noted eight normal rising dif thongs, as follows : ou, as in fool (foul), li, as in see (sii); oo, as in note (noot); ee, as in gate (geet); ao, as in now (nao) ; ai, as in wise (waiz) ; or, as in boy (boi) ; ai, as in kite (kait). The last four dif thongs (ao, ai, ei, ai), when followd by a syllable beginning with a vowel, usually become au, ai, ei, ai, as in tower ('tau-9z), qutet ( 7 ku)ai-9t), buoyant ('boi-ont), buyer ('bai-az).
There are also four normal falling dif thongs, after [!], [i/J, [v], [f], as fellows: iu, as in purlieu ('pBzttu), diffidence ('diftiu-sns), feverfew ('fii-va^fiu) ; io, as in emolument (i'moHo-m9nt) ; io:, as in lure (Ho:z) ; is, as in behavfor (bi'hee-viaz).
Besides these sixteen normal difthengs, there is the one normal tif thong, iou, after [1], [v], and [f], as in lieu (Hou), view (viou), and few (fiou).
