York, and provost 0/ Beverley , was chosen 2i8t Jan. ^3'5~^^'"j ^n<l obtained the royal assent to his elec- tion 5th Feb. ; and his Majesty on the 8th of the same month wrote to the court of Rome letters com- mendatory of the archbishop elect *9, and also issued letters of safe conduct for him to proceed at once to the Pope on the subject of his election ^O; notwith- standing which he was not able to obtain consecration till 25th Sept. 1317^^. The King restored the tem- poralities to him 8th Oct. in the same year^-. He died in April 1340'^, and was buried in York cathe- dral near the font. He successively held the office of chancellor of England and treasurer of the exchequer. On J 3th April 1340 the King issued his license to the dean and chapter of York to elect an archbishop vice William de Melton deceased^*, and 1342 William la Zouche, dea?i of Yorky was elected 2nd 16 Edw. III.
