no YORK. issued 1 6th Nov. [423'^; in pursuance of which the chapter elected Pim.ii', h'lshoj) (if M^orcester, as archUishoj) of York, and the King assented to the election 25th Jan. 1423-4, and informed the Pope, by letter of that date, that in the election of the bishop of Worcester the chapter had been unanimous^. The Pope nevertheless rejected the election by the chapter, and appointed Richard P'lemmyxg, bishop of Lincoln^ to the archi- episcopal see. This provision-'- however was so op- posed to the feelings of the chapter, and objectionable to the King's council, (his Majesty was then only a child,) that they took vigorous measures for resisting the power assumed by the court of Rome of filling vacancies in English bishoprics against or without the King's consent. Flennning was consequently compelled to relincjuish his pretensions to the archbishopric, and ui)on certain humiliating conditions was allowed to re- turn to the see of Lincoln, whieli the council had seized into the King's hands upon his venturing to accept the archbishopric of York without the King's permission. The King's council then, among other ecclesiastical promotions, nominated ^^ 1426 Joiix Kemp, bishop of London^ to the see of York, to .| Hin. VI. which he was elected 8th April 1426.
