Upon this the bishop elect appealed to the Pope, who quashed the election on account of its in- formality, and in the plenitude of his apostolic power not only appointed him bishop of Carlisle, but also consecrated him at Rome. He then wrote and in- formed the King of what he had done, and entreated his Majesty to restore the bishop to favour^. Upon the receipt of the letter of pope Nicholas, the King was at length induced to restore the temporalities to the new bishop, which he did loth July 1280^^. Bishop Ireton made his profession of obedience to the arch- bishop of York on the 22nd of the same month^^; and the prior and convent of Carlisle, upon paying a fine of 100^. to the King, were pardoned the two hundred marks they owed as part of the amerciament put upon them foi' their temerity in proceeding to an election without obtaining the royal license ^^ He died on the last day of February 1291—2^^, and was buried in Carlisle cathedral. On 23rd March 1291—2 the King issued his license*^ to the prior and convent of Carlisle to elect a bishop in the room of Ralph de Ireton, in pursuance of which they elected 1292 John de Halucton'^'^ or Halaughtox, canon of Car- 2oEdw. I. Usle^ 23rd April 1292, and informed the King 25th April of their choice, and prayed his Majesty to give his assent thereto^^ which he accordingly did 26th May following ^'^, and on 1 8th June restored the tem- poralities to him>=^.
