The King restored the temporahties to him 26th June following'^^. He died at the close of the year 1362, and was buried in Carlisle cathedral. On ist Jan. 1362—3 the prior and convent of Carlisle inform the King of the death of Gilbert de Welton their bishop, and pray that a conge d;lire may be issued^. A license accordingly issued i8th Jan. 1362-3"^; not- withstanding which, 1363 Thomas de Appleby, a canon of Carlisle^ was provided 37Edw.iii, to this see by the Pope; and having done fealty to the King, his majesty restored the temporalities to him loth Aug. 136371. He died 5th Dec. 1395. The conge d'elire, vice bishop Appleby, issued 30th Dec. 13957% and William Strickland was chosen by the prior and convent, but the Pope quashed the election, and 1396 Robert Reade, bishop of Waterford and Lisuwre, was 19 Ric. II. translated to Carlisle by papal prevision, and the tem- poralities of the see were restored to him 30th March 139673. In October in that year he was translated to Chichester 74. 1397 Thomas Merkes"^, S.T. Magister, a monk of West - 20 Ric.
