ARCHDEACONS. Robert was the first who held this dignity, and he seems to have been appointed at the erection of the see in 1 132. William, archdeacon of Carlisle^ was witness to a charter in 1 150. Robert possessed it about the year 1160, was a witness (with Walter, prior of the said church) to several deeds^. Peter de Ross was witness to a confirmatory patent of John, prior of Carlisle, in Ji8o. He died in 1 196'^ Aumertc de Tailboys, nephew to Philip, bishop elect of Durham, was appointed archdeacon of Carlisle by king Richard I in 1196.
