ARCHDEACONS OF CHESTER, AFTER ITS SEPARATION FROM THE DIOCESE OF COVENTRY AND LICHFIELD. William Knight, LL.D.,the last archdeacon of Ches- ter while appurtenant to Coventry and Lichfield, hav- ing surrendered this dignity 20th May 1541, that king Henry VIII. might annex it to the see of Chester^ was made bishop of Bath and Wells ; and John Birde, the first bishop of Chester, obtained the archidiaconal power of the see on the annual payment of 50^. to a nominal archdeacon. He held the dignity till his deprivation, and his successor in the see, George Cotes, also held it for some time. This pre- late subsequently, in 1554, constituted Robert Persevall his archdeacon. Ho was deprived in 1559- Robert Rogers. He died in 1595. CuTHBERT Bellott, collated 13th June 1595. George Snell, collated i6th Jan. 1618-19, on the re- signation of Bellott; installed 30th Nov. following. He died 5th Feb. 1655-6, John Carter, presented by the Crown 19th Oct. 1660. William Finmore, installed 6th Nov. 1666. He died 7th April 1686. John Allen, collated 12th April 1686. Ho died 17th April 1695. Edmund Entwisle, collated 30th April 1695. Ho died 15th Sept. 1707. John Thane, installed in Feb. 1707-8. Louis Stephens, 12th Sept. 1727. Ob. 1747- William Powell, dean 0/ St. Asaph, 22nd April 1747, on the death of Louis Stephens. Ob. 13th April 1751.
