The see teas vacant for nearly Jive years ^^ between the death of bishop Flambard and the consecration of his successor, Geoffrey, surnamed Rufus, the King's chancellor, was consecrated at York 6th Aug. 1133^- by Thurstan, archbishop of York 9^, and was enthroned on the loth of the same month. He died 6th May 1140 9^. The see was void three years. William de S. Barbara, dean of York., was elected to this see 14th March 1142-3, and consecrated at Winchester 20th June following ^'^ by Henry, bishop of Winchester, the Pope's legate. He was enthroned 18th Aug. 1 143^^ and died r4th Nov. 1152^^ Hugh Pudsey^s, treasurer of York and archdeacon of Winchester, was elected 3ist Jan. 1152-3^9^ and was 88 Hoveden (f, 268 b) says ist Feb. iioi; but Simeon makes it the 3rd of that month. 89 He returned to England in 1 107.
