He held this see in i 230, and died in 1249. 1249 Laurence, archdeacon of Man, was elected in 1249; and, being at that time in Norway, received consecra- tion at the hands of the archbishop of Drontheim. He was shipwrecked and drowned on his return to take possession of his see. 1252 Richard held the office in 1252, and enjoyed the dig- nity but a short time. 1253 Stephen was bishop of the Isles in 1253^^ ] 1:53 Richard, an Englishman, was consecrated at Rome also in 1253. He died in 1274. He was succeeded by Mark of Galloway, who had letters of protection 13th June 1326. He was styled " Episcopus de Man/' and " Episcopus Sodorensis. Ob. in 1303. Onaciius w^as bishop in 1304. Alan held the see in 1305^^. He died 15th Feb. 1321, and was buried at Rothsay in Scotland, and was suc- ceeded by 1321 Gilbert, who died in 1323, and was also buried at Rothsay. 1324 Bernard de Linton, rt/;io^ of Arbroath ; he was styled " Episcopus Sodorensis," died in ^'^^^^ and was suc- ceeded by 1334 Thomas about the yeav 1334 ; he died 20th Sept. 1348. During his episcopate the English obtained possession of the Isle of Man, and he was consequently the last bishop appointed by the Scotch. His successor was 1348 William Russel, a Manhsrnan, who was consecrated at Avignon by pope Clement VI in 1348. He died 21 st April 1374, and was buried at Furness abbey. He was succeeded by 1374 John Dunk an, a native of Man^ who was elected 21st May 1374, confirmed by Gregor}' XI at Avignon 6th Nov. following, and consecrated on the 25th of the 11 Refjr.
