BISHOPS. 327 1570 John Salisbury, suffragan bishop of Thetford, dean of Norwich^ chancellor of Lincoln cathedral^ and archdea- con of Anglesey^ who was nominated to this see 27th March 1570, confirmed by the archbishop of York 7th April, and received the Queen's assent 29th Sept. 15701^. He died in Sept. 1573, and was buried in Norwich cathedral. James Staxley is said to have been bishop of this see from 1573 to 1575, other accounts make the see vacant from the death of bishop Salisbury until the appointment of 1575 John Mericke, who was nominated by Henry earl of Derby, and the Queen assented to his election 5th Nov. 1575 ^^ and again 13th April 1576 ^8. He was consecrated at Lambeth 15th April 1576, and installed in his own cathedral in the following year. He died 7th Nov. 1599, and was succeeded by 1599 George Lloyd, who w^as consecrated in 1599, and was translated to Chester in 1604. 1604 John Philips, archdeacon of Cleveland and Man^ was nominated by the King to this see 29th Jan. 1604—5, and consecrated in the bishop of London's chapel i oth Feb. following ^^. He died 7th Aug. 1633. 1634 William FoRSTER was presented by the earl of Derby 26th Dec. 1633, and obtained the royal assent 26th Feb. following; he was consecrated 9th April 1634. He died in Feb. 1634—5. 1635 Richard Parr was consecrated loth June 1635. He died in 1643. The see was vacant till the Restoration. t66i Samuel R utter, archdeacon of Man., was confirmed as bishop of this see 8th Oct. 1661. He died 30th May 1662.
