344 ETON. Sir Henry Wotton was elected in 1623. He died in Dec. 1639, and was buried in the college chapel. Richard Stewart or Steward, LL.D., succeeded in Dec. or Jan. 1639—40. He was dispossessed of it in i643-^8. Francis Rous or Rowse was substituted by the au- thority of the parliament then in power in 1643. He died at Acton near London 7th Jan. 1658, and was buried in the college chapel. Nicholas Lockyer seems to have been provost of Eton from 1658 to 1660. Nicholas Moncke or le Moyne, M.A., had this dig- nity conferred on him by king Charles the Second 7th July 1660; in Jan. 1660-61 he was made bishop of Hereford, and had a dispensation to this office for life in commendam. Ob. 17th Dec. 1661. John Meredith, S.T.P., 6th March 1661-2. He died xvii Cal. Aug. (16th July) 1665, and was buried in All Souls' college chapel, Oxon. Richard Allestry or Allestree, S.T.P., succeeded 10th Aug. 1665. He died 28th Jan. 1680-81, aetat. 61, and was buried in the college chapel ^^^. Zacharias Cradock, S.T.P., was instituted 26th Feb. 1680—81, on the death of Richard Allestree. He died in Sept. 1695, and was buried in the college chapel. John Coppleston.
