The arms of this college are thus blazoned : The arms of the see of Winchester between, first, azure, a pelican with wings disclosed, vulned, and feeding her young ; and the arms of Hugh Oldham, bishop of Exeter, (viz.) sable, a chevron between three owls, and in a chief, argent, three roses gules. King Henry the Eighth, by his patent dated 10th May 1524, granted leave to cardinal Wolsey to convert the monastery of St. Frideswide into a college, by virtue of which the cardinal changed the name of St. Frideswide into Cardinal college ; and king Henry confirmed it by his patent dated 13 th July 1525. The same King by other patents, dated jst, 5th, and loth May 1526, granted several immunities and privileges to the said newly-erected college. But on 15th Jan. 1530-31, all the lands and patronages were surren- dered into the King's hands, by deed dated as above, John Higden being then dean ; and the King (chang- ing the name from Cardinal college to King Henry the P^ighth's college) on 27th Sept. 1532 vested all back again into the hands of trustees. In the year 1542 the same King erected a new bishop's sec at Osney; but soon after, not liking that situation, removed it to Oxford, and changed the name? onco more, from King Henry the Eightli's college, to Christ Church.
