A small college, by the name of University Hall, was founded by Richard Badew, chancellor of this Univer- sity, about the year 1326; but about sixteen years after a casual fire reduced this house to ashes, on the ruins of which Elizabeth, grand-daughter to king Ed- ward the First, second daughter and coheiress to Gil- bert, earl of Clare, Hertford and Gloucester, widow of John, and mother of William de Burgo, both earls of Ulster, rebuilt and endowed this college, naming it Clare Hall^^ MASTERSJ6. Walter de Thaxsted, 1326. Ralph Kirdington, 1342 ; but his name does not occur in the archives of Clare hall. Nicholas de Brunne held the office in 1359. John Dunwicii or de Donewick, 1374, chancellor of this University in 137 i and 1374. John de Chateresse.
