688 CAMBRIDGE. JESUS COLLEGE Was formerly a nunnery, founded by Malcolm the Fourth, king of Scotland, and dedicated to St. Rade- gund. By the royal license of king Henry the Se- venth, it was converted into a college by John Alcock, bishop of Ely, lord chancellor of England, anno 1496, dedicating it to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Radegund, to be called Jesus College. MASTERS. William Chubbes, S.T.P., was appointed the first master in 1497. He had been fellow of Pembroke hall. John Eccleston, S.T.P., 1506. He died in Feb. 1515. Thomas Alcock, LL.D., 1515. He resigned the 14th July following. William Capox, S.T.P., 151 6. He resigned in 1546. John Reston, S.T.P., loth Nov. 1546. Edmund Pierpoint, S.T.B., fellow of Christ's college, John Fuller, LL.D,, 1553. He died in 1558. Thomas Redman, S.T.B., fellow of Trinity college, Edward Gascoyne, 1560. John Lakyn, S.T.B., 1562. Thomas Ithell, LL.D., 1563. John Bell, S.T.P., 1579. John Duport, S.T.P., 1590. He died in 1617. Roger Andrewes, S.T.P., 1618. William Beale, S.T.P., 1632. Richard Sterne, S.T.P., 1633.
