Edward Stafford, duke of Buckingham, anno 15 19, was the original founder of this college, calling it by the name of Buckingham college. Thomas lord Audeley of Walden, knight of the most noble Order of the Garter, lord chancellor of England, 33Hen.VlII^7^ was the next, and indeed the principal founder of the college, changing the name from Buck- ingham college to that of St. Mary Magdalene, which it now bears. MASTERS. Robert Evans, dfMn of Bangor y was admitted the first master by the founder in 1544. Richard Carre, LL.D., 1546. Roger Kelke, B.D., archdeacon of Stow ^ succeeded in 1559, and died 6th Jan. 1575-6. Richard Rowland, S.T.B., succeeded in 1576, and in 1577 was translated to the mastership of St. John's college in this university. Henry Coping kr was nominated by the Queen to suc- ceed in this mastership in 1577, but the patron (after- wards earl of Sufft)lk, or those in whose wardship he was) contesting his title, he resigned, having held this mastership a short while. ^7 The Great Seal was delivered created Lord Audeley AValden in to sir Thomas Audeley as chan- Nov. ir,3H.
