DEANS. 71 Francis Willis, S.T.P., had this dignity conferred on him by the Queen ist Jan. 1586-7, but he was not installed till nth June 1587. He died 29th Oct. 1596, and was buried in the cathedral. Richard Eedes, S.T.P., succeeded 19th June 1597. He died 19th Nov. 1604, and was buried in the ca- thedral. James Montague, S.T.P., was presented 28th Dec. 1604, and in 1608 he was made bishop of Bath and Wells 93. Arthur Lake, S.T.P., was installed 23rd April 1608; and 17th Oct. 16 16 he was elected bishop of Bath and Wells «^. Joseph Hall, S.T.P., presented 9th Dec. 1616 9^; and in 1627 he was made bishop of Exeter. William Juxon, LL.D., was presented to this deanery 7th Jan. 1627—8; and in 1633 he was elected bishop of Hereford, but before consecration was removed to London. Roger Main waring, S.T.P., was nominated to this dignity 28th Oct. 1633; and in 1636 he was made bishop of St. David's ^^. Christopher Potter, S.T. P., provost of Queen's college, Oxford^ was presented 19th Feb. 1635-6; and in Jan. 1644-5 ^® ^^'^'^ made dean of Durham, but died (be- fore possession taken) 3rd March 1645—6, setat. ^^. RiciiAUD Holdswokth, S.T.P., archdeacon of Hunting- don^ was nominated by the King to this deanery soon after the nomination of Potter to Durham, but was never installed. He died 22nd June 1649, and was buried in the church of St. Peter Poor, London. His will is in the Prerogative Office of Canterbury «". Vacant eleven years. John Oliver, S.T.P., president of Magdalen college, Oxford, was presented 7th July i66o, and installed
