anthropist, was born Jan. 1, 1823, on Long Island. He established an extensive business as an iron-founder in New York City. He was a liberal giver to benevolent objects, especially for the erection of churches for the methodist denominations; and founded Cornell college at Mount Vernon, Iowa. He died March 17, 1870, in New York City. Corning, Charles Robert, lawyer, jurist, state senator, author, was born Dec. 20, 1855, in Concord, N.H. In 1889 he was a member of the New Hampshire state senate. He is now probate judge. He is the author of various Monographs and historical papers.
Corning, Erastus, railroad president, bankcongressman, was born Dec. 14, 1794, in Norwich, Conn. He established in Albany the well-known hardware business of Erastus Corning and company. He was a major; and was also for several years an influential railroad, bank, and canal company president. For several terras he was a member of the state legislature; and in 1857-59 and 186163 he .was a representative to the thirtyfifth and thirtv-seventh congresses. He died April 9, 1872, in Albany, N.Y. Corning, James Leonard, physician, author, was born Aug. 28, 1855, in Stamford, Conn. Cornish, Johnston, manufacturer, state senator, congressman, was born in Hunterdon county, N.J. He entered the Cornish piano and organ company as junior partner, and became the manager of that institution. He was mayor of Washington in 18S4-88. He was elected state senator in 1890; and in 1893-95 he was a representative from NeW York to the fifty-third congress as a democrat.
Cornish, Leslie Colby, lawyer, jurist, bankwas born Oct. 8, 1854, in Winslow, Maine-. In 1878 he was a member of the Maine state legislature; and in 1870 was admitted to the practice of law. Since 1907 he has been an associate justice of the supreme court of Maine. Comman, Oliver Perry, educator, lecturer, author, was born Aug. 26, 1866, in Philadelphia, Pa. He is a district superintendent of the public schools of Philadelphia, Pa.; and since 1897 has been lecturer at the university of Pennsylvania on comparative psychology. He is the author of Spelling in the Elementary Schools; and co-author of Brief Topical Survey of the United States History; and Geography Primer. Cornwall, Henry Bedinger, mineralogist, author, was born July 29, 1844, in Southport, Conn. He was assistant in the school of mines in 1865-73; and since 1873 a professor of mineralogy at Princeton college. He is the author of Manual of Blow-Pipe Analy-
