In 1879 he graduated from tbe Hempstead institute; in 1882 from the Massachusetts state normal school at Westfleld; and in 1895 received the degree of LL.D. from the law department of George Washington university. In 1883-85 he was a general law

and verbatim reporter in New York City; and in 1885-89 was principal of the preparatory schools of New York City. He has been private secretary to various public officials; and in 1895 was appointed stenographer to President Cleveland. In 1896 he became executive clerk;, in 1898 assistant secretary to president McKinley; became secretary in 1900; and also acted in the same capacity to President Roosevelt. In 1903-05 he was secretary of commerce and labor; in 1905-07 was postmaster general; in 1907-08 was secretary of the treasury. Corthell, Elmer Lawrence, civil engineer, author, was born Sept. 30, 1840, in South Abington, Mass. He was educated at Phillips

She is a literary writer on the staff of the New York Tribune. She is the author of Songs and Lyrics. Cortissoz, Royal, journalist, author, waa born in New York. He has been literary editor of the New York Tribune and a lecturer on art. He is the author of Augustus St. Gaudens. Corwin, Arthur M., physician, author, was bom in 1864 in Hawaii. For ten years he was physical demonstrator of physical diagnosis in the Rush medical college of Chicago, 111. Since 1895 he has been a clergyman of the reformed church of America; in 1905-07 filled a pastorate in the Second presbyterian church of New Brunswick, N.J. and since 1907 at North Branch, N.J. Wyo. In 1862-64 he served in war. He was president of the Pittsburg security and savings association. Corwin, Edward Xanjore, clergyman, genealogist, author, was born July 13, 1834, in New York City. He is the official historian of the Reformed church in America. He is the author of several works, and in 1897-98 was engaged in historical researches at Amsterdam, Holland. His works are: Three Editions of Manual of the Reformed Church in America; and Corwin Genealogy; Millstone Centennial; and Character and Development of the Reformed Church in the Colonial Period; and other works. Corwin, Franklin, lawyer, congressman, was born July 13, 1818, in Lebanon, Ohio. He served several years in the state legislature of Ohio; and was a member of the state senate. He moved to Illinois in 1857; and was elected to the legislature of that state, serving two years as speaker. In 1873-75 he was a representative to the forty-third congress as a republican. Corwin, Moses B., lawyer, congressman, was born Jan. 5, 1790, in Bourbon county, Ky. In 1838-40 he was elected to the legislature. In 1849-51 and 1853-55 he was a representative from Ohio to the thirty-first and thirty-third congresses. He died April in Fallston,

Corwin, Thomas, lawyer, congressman. United States senator, cabinet officer, was born July 39, 1794, in Bourbon county, Ky. He was elected to the Ohio legislature in 1823; and in 1831-40 and 1859-61 he was » representative from Ohio to the twentysecond to the twentysixth congresses and I to thirty-sixth the congress. He was the fourteenth governor of Ohio in 1840-42. In 1845-51 he was United States senator; and in 1850-53 he was secretary of the treasury. He died Dec. 18, 1865, in Washington, D.C. Amos Breckenridge, soldier, Corwine, journalist, diplomat, was born in 1815 in Maysville, Ky. He served during the Mexican war, being a. lieutenant in the Mississippi regiment commanded by Jefferson Davis; and was severely wounded at Buena Vista. After that war, in partnership with his brother Samuel, he edited the Cincinnati Chronicle. During the administrations of Presidents Tyler and Fillmore he was United States consul at Panama. In 1856 he was sent by President Pierce to investigate the Panama massacres; and on his report were based the treaty and adjustment of damages between the United States and New Granada.
