Baltimore. Courtis, Frank, naval officer, was born June 18, 1844, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1866 he graduated from the United States naval academy. He served throughout the civil war; and was promoted to master in 1869. He attained the rank of rear-admiral in the United States navy in 1900; and was retired from active service for physical inability. He died Jan. 19, 1908, in Washington, D.C. Courtis, William Munroe, mining engineer, metallurgist, scientist, was born Jan. 7, 1843, in Boston, Mass. He was chief engineer of the survey of Santo Domingo; and has patented an improved mill apparatus for saving waste in tailings. He is a member of the American association for the advancement of science.

was born in 1859 in Cedar county, Iowa. In 1886 he was elected to the Iowa state legislature; and was elected by the house of representatives as one of the prosecutors for the Brown impeachment, tried before the state senate during 1887. In 1888 he was elected prosecuting attorney and also presidential elector for the fifth congressional district; and is prominent as a congressional orator. In 1893-1907 he was a representative from Iowa to the fifty-third, fifty-fourth, fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh, fiftyeighth, fifty-ninth and sixtieth congresses as a republican. Coutler, John F., farmer, statesman, was born Nov. 15, 1840, in Cass county, Mich. In 1870 he was elected a member of the Michigan state legislature. He moved to Nebraska in 1874; and was there elected to the state senate in 1878. In 1882 he moved to Kansas; and was elected to the legislature of that state in 1884, and again in 1892. fifty-fifth,

Courtney, Frederick, clergyman, bishop, was born Jan. 5, 1837, in England. In 18881904 he was a bishop of Nova Scotia; and since that time has been rector of St. James' church in New York City. Courtney, Walter, physician, surgeon, was born Sept. IS, 1855, in Ontario, Canada. In 1883 he graduated from the university of Michigan. He is a successful physician and surgeon of Brainerd, Minn. and president of the upper Mississippi medical society. Since 1888 he has been chief surgeon of the Northern pacific railroad. He is a member of the Minnesota academy of medicine and the American medical association; and has been president of the Minnesota state medical
