of George Crompton, president of Crompton Associates, of Worcester, Mass. He died May 1, 1891, in Windsor, Conn. Cromwell, Bartlett James, naval officer, was bom March 28, 1841, in Nebraska. His first extensive trip was when he was commander and was assigned to the navigation of Admiral Schufeldt's flagship the Ticonderoga on its trip around the globe in 1879. In 1895 he was a member of the examining and retiring board of the navy department, being promoted to the rank of commodore in 1898. He succeeded to the rank of rear ad-

He then practiced law until 1872, when he began the publication of the Binghamton Times. In 1876 it was consolidated with the Binghamton Republican. poet, was born on March 14, 1834, in Little Falls, N.Y. He became acting assistant surgeon in the army until 1866; and since 1867 has been a surgeon in the United States army. He is the author of Reymond, a volume of poems.

Crook, Alja Robinson, educator, geologist,

17, 1864, in Circleville, Ohio.

In 1887 he graduated from the Ohio We«leyan university with the degree of A.B.; studied in the British museum; in the universities of Berlin, Zurich and Munich; and received the degree of Ph.D. from the latter institution. He worked in three of the greatest museums in Europe; and since 1893 hai been professor of mineralogy and economic geology in the Northwestern university at Evanston, 111. As a mountaineer he has had experiences in the Urals, the Caucasus and in the mountains of the United States and Mexico. He is a lecturer of note; and is a fellow of the geological society of America. Since 1906 he has been curator of the Illinois state museum of natural history; and secretary in the Illinois state science. He is the author of The of the Chicago Area. is

Crook, George, soldier, was bom Sept. 8, 1838, near Dayton, Ohio. He entered upon the command of the Kanawha district in western Virginia in 1864 he made constant raids, and was in numerous actions. He received the brevets of brigadier-general and majorgeneral in the United States army in 1865. In 1872 he was assigned to the Arizona district to quell the Indian disturbances. He died March 21, 1890, in Chicago, HI. Crook, Harrison, physician, was bom April Maryland. In 1878 he received degree from the Georgetown Medical college; in which institution he was demonstrator of anatomy in 1878-82; and still holds the chair of clinical surgery. For the past ten years he has been surgeon to the Providence hospital of Washington, D.C. Crook, Isaac, clergyman, educator, college president, was bom in Crossville, Ohio. He has been president of the university of the Pacific; chancellor of the Nebraska Wesleyan university at Lincoln; and president of the Ohio university at Athens. He has been pastor of several leading churches; and is now pastor of the Methodist episcopal church at Ironton, Ohio. Crook, James King, physician, author, was bom Feb. 25, 1859, in Allentown, Ala. Since 1880 he has practiced medicine in New York City. He is the author of Mineral Waters of the United States. Crook, James Walter, educator, lecturer, author, was bom Dec. 21, 1858, in Bewd, Canada.^ Since 1895 he has been professor of economics in Amherst college.
