In 1861 he established himself as a traveling stove merchant at Connersville, Ind. In 1880 he organized the Wrought iron range company of St. Louis with a capital stock of thirty thousand dollars ; and in time the business increased until it equalled those of any two concerns of its kind in the world. In 1903 he organized and established the Asbestos roofing and covering company; and has since been its president. Culwer, Daniel, pioneer, founder, was born in 1793 in Maryland. He was the first American that went to upper California; and the first that built a house in San Francisco. He was also the founder of the town of Santa Barbara. Culyer, John Yapp, civil engineer, landscape architect, was born May 18, 1839, in

City. He has been associate engineer to the Albany parks; the South side parks of Chicago; to the state capitol grounds in Nashville; and parks in Pittsburg, Albany and other cities. He has invented implements for improved road construction and for the transplanting of large trees. For twenty-five years he was a member of the Brooklyn board of education. Cumback, Will, soldier, educator, lawyer, lecturer, congressman, poet, was born March 24, 1829, in Franklin county, Ind. In 185557 he was a representative from Indiana to the thirty-fourth congress. He was a presidential elector in 1861; and during that year was appointed an additional paymaster in the army. In 1868 he was elected lieutenantgovernor of Indiana. He died Aug. 1, 1905, in Greensburg, Ind. Cumberland, George W., actor, founder, was bom in 1836. He is said to have founded the order of Elks. He died June 6, 1901, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Cumings, Edgar Roscoe, paleontologist, scientist, was born Feb. 20, 1874, in Madison, Ohio. In 1898-1903 he was an instructor of paleontology; and since 1903 has been associate professor and head of the department of geology in the Indiana university. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. Cummer, Wellington Willson, lumberman, public official, donor, was born Oct. 21, 1846, in Toronto Canada. He was educated at the high school of Waterdown, Canada; and is a prominent lumberman of Jacksonville, Fla. Cumming, Alexander, pioneer, clergyman, was born in 1726, in Freehold, N.J. He was the first presbyterian minister that preached within the bounds of Tennessee. In 176163 he was pastor of the Old South church of Boston, Mass. He died Aug. 25, 1763, in Boston, Mass. Cumming, Alfred, governor, was born about 1802. He was governor of the territory Utah in 1857-61. He died Oct. 9, 1873, in Augusta, Ga.
