Curtis, Charles, lawyer, congressman, Uni- ted States senator, was born Jan. 25, 1860, in North Topeka, Kan. Since 1881 he has been engaged in the practice of law in Topeka, Kan.; and in 1884-88 was prosecuting attorney of Shaw- nee county, Kan. In 1893-1907 he was & representative from Kansas to the fifty. third, fifty-fourth, fifty-fifth, the fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh, fifty-eighth and fifty-ninth congresses as a republican. In 1907 he was elected a member of the United States senate from Kansas for the term ending in 1913. He was a member of the Taft party to the Philippines.

Curtis, Charles Albert, soldier, author, was born Oct. 4, 1835, in Hallowell, Maine. In 1862 he enlisted in the civil war; and in 1870 retired with the rank of first lieutenant. In 1865 he was brevetted captain; and since 1898 he has been colonel of the Wisconsin national guard. He is the author of Captured by the Navajos.

Curtis, Charles Boyd, soldier, lawyer, author, was born Sept. 24, 1827, in Penn Yan, N.Y. He served in the civil war as captain of the fifty-seventh regiment New York volunteers. He was the author of Velasquez and Murillo. He died March 25, 1905, in New York City,

Curtis, Cyrus, publisher, founder, was born June 18, 1850. He became publisher of the Tribune and Farmer of Philadelphia, Pa.; and afterward established the Ladies' Home Journal. He is now head of the Curtis publishing company.

Curtis, David A., librarian, journalist, author, was born Oct. 19, 1846, in Norwich, Conn. Since 1873 he has contributed to many of the New York newspapers and magazines. In 1892-93 he was librarian for New York City public library. He is the author of Beyond Hypnotism; Queer Luck; Science of Draw Poker; and Stand Pat.

Curtis, Edward, lawyer, congressman, was horn in Vermont. In 1837-41 he was a representative from New York to the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses; and was appointed collector of New York by President Harrison. He died in New York. Curtis, Edward, physician, author, was born June 4, 1838, in Providence, R. I. He was assistant surgeon in the United States army; and is now a physician of New York City. He is the author of Manual of General Medicinal Technology.

Curtis, Francis, statistician, journalist, historian, author, was born March 26, 1858, in Derby, Conn. He first entered journalism in 1881; and has written numerous pamphlets on the tariff and other political subjects. He is the author of History of the Republican Party; and History of American Tariffs.

Curtis, Frederic Colton, soldier, educator, physician, was born Oct. 19, 1843, in Unionville, S.C. He served in the civil war as private in the forty-first Wisconsin regiment. In 1872 was appointed physician to Albany; in 1877 lecturer in the summer course of the Albany medical college; and in 1880 was professor of dermatology in the college.

Curtis, Frederick Smillie, educator, founder, was born Feb. 18, 1850, in Stratford, Conn. In 1862-66 he attended the Stratford academy; in 1869 received the degree of Ph. D. from Sheffield scientific school of Yale university; and also took a post-graduate course in that institution. He was professor of mathematics and science in the state normal school at Westchester, Pa.; and was professor of chemistry in Swarthmore college in 1872-75. In 1875 he founded and has since been principal of the Curtis school for young boys at Brookfield Center, Conn. In 1894-1907 he was a member of the board of education of Brookfield, Conn.; and in 1903 was moderator of the state conference of congregational churches.

Curtis, George, banker, legislator, was born in 1794 in Worcester, Mass. He moved to Providence, K.I., at an early age, and was several times speaker of the assembly. He moved to New York in 1840, and was appointed cashier of the Bank of commerce; and later became president of the Continental banks. Died in 1856 in Jacksonville, Fla. Curtis, George Carroll, geologist, sculptor, explorer, author, was born July 15, 1872, in Abington, Mass. In 1900 he received the gold medal at Paris, France; and also at St. Louis in 1904. He made the Harvard geo- graphical models. He was a member of the Dixie expedition to Martinique; and explored in the South Sea in 1904-05.

Curtis, George Lenox, physician, author. was born April 19, 1854. He is successor to Professor James E. Garrotson of Philadelphia, Pa. He is professor and ex-clinical instructor in oral and facial surgery, to which he confines his practice.

Curtis, George Martin, manufacturer, banker, congressman, was born April 1, 1844, near Oxford, N.Y. Since 1867 he has been An image should appear at this position in the text. engaged in the manufacture of doors, sash, blinds and lumber in Clinton, Iowa. He was a member of the twenty-second general assembly of Iowa; and delegate to the republican national convention in 1892. In 1895-99 he was a representative to the fifty-fourth and fifty-fifth congresses as a republican; and served on important committees.
