Turning his attention to the new art of making daguerreotypes, he discovered the process of making pictures on glass, which after his own name he called ambrotypes. He died July 31, 1867, in Worcester, Mass. Cutting, John Tyler, soldier, business man, congressman, was born Sept. 7,- 1844, in Westport, N.Y. He enlisted in Taylor's Chicago battery and served until 1862; re-enlisted in 1864 in the CJhicago mercantile battery and served until the expiration of the war. He removed to California in 1877 and established a wholesale fruit and commission business under the title of The John T. Cutting and company. In 1891-93 he was a representative to the fifty-second congress as a republican. Cutting, Jonas, lawyer, jurist. In 1854, 1861 and 1868 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of Maine. Cutting, Mrs. Mary Stewart, writer, author, was born June 27, 1851, in New York City. Since 1894 she has been engaged in literary work. She is the author of Little Stories of Married Life; Heart of Lynn; Little Stories of Courtship; and More Stories of Married Life. Cutting, Sewall Sylvester, educator, clergyman, journalist, author, was born Jan. 19, 1813, in Windsor, Vt. In 1855 he bought the New York Baptist Register, consolidating it with the Recorder and changing the name to the Exaqiiner. In the same year he was called to a, professorship in the university of Rochester, which he held until 1868. He was the author of Historical Vindications; Struggles and Triumphs of Religious Liberty; and Ancient Baptistries. He died Feb. 7, 1883, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Cutting, Star Willard, educator, author, was born Oct. 14, 1858, in West Brattleboro, Vt. Since 1892 he has be^n professor and head of the department of Germanic languages and literature in the university of Chicago. He is the author of several books in German. Cutting, William, soldier, was born in New York. He served in the civil war; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Cutts, Charles, lawyer. United States senator, was born in 1769 in Massachusetts. He was elected a member of the state legislature in 1804 and then speaker of the house.
In 1810-15 he was United States senator from New Hampshire. He was secretary of the United States senate in 1814-35. He died in 1846 in Virginia. He was elected to the forty-eighth congress, but died before taking his seat. Cutts, Maria, sister superior, was born in 1811, in England. She was named superior of the Grand Coteau convent after her arrival; and afterward was made superior of all the convents of her order in the west of the United States. Richard, statesman, congressman, 22, 1771, in Saco, Maine. In 1790 he graduated from Harvard college. In 1799 and 1800 he was a member of the Massachusetts house of representatives. In 180113 was a representative from Massachusetts to the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth congresses as a democrat. In 1813-17 he was superintendent general of military supplies. In 1817-39 he was second comptroller of the treasury. He died April 7, 1845, in Washington, D.C. Cutts, Richard Dominicus, soldier, was born in District of Columbia. He served in the civil war; and in 1865 was brevettedbrigadier-general of volunteers. He died Dec. 13, 1883. Cuyler, Cornelius C, clergyman, was born Feb. 15, 1783, in Albany, N.Y. For many years he was president of the board of trustees of Jefferson medical college. He was the author of A Narrative of a Revival of Religion in the Reformed Dutch Church, Poughkeepsie. He died on Aug. 31, 1850, in Philadelphia, Pa. Cuyler, Jeremiah, lawer, jurist, was bom in Georgia. In 1831 he was appointed district judge of the United States court for the district of Georgia. He died May 7, 1839, in Savannah, Ga. Cuyler, John M., army surgeon, was born about 1810 in Georgia. He entered the army as assistant surgeon in 1834; was actively engaged in the Creek war of 1838; in the Seminole war of 1840; and served with distinction through the Mexican war; receiving promotion as major and surgeon in 1847.
