18, 1818, in Centre Groton, conceived the idea of applying the principle of the clarionet to a large trumpet to serve as a fog signal for mariners. He died Oct. 13, 1866, in Groton, Conn. DaboU, Charles Miner, inventor, was born Oct. 14, 1833, in Groton, Conn. He is the inventor of the cast-iron bottom jack screw barrel, now in full operation for twenty-five years; as is also his new oval slide parallel bench vise. He has invented also a breast drill, a self-centering brace for bits, a moving machine, and the Daboll, bushing. Daboll, David Austin, journalist, publisher, state senator, was born in 1813 in Groton, Conn. He sat continuously in the state house of representatives in 1846-71; and he then served a term in the state senate. He assisted his father in the preparation of the New Arithmetic; and after his father's death has continued the publication of the New England Almanac. He died in 1895 in Groton, Conn. Daboll, Nathan, educator, publisher, author, was born about 1750. He published a treatise on arithmetic, entitled the Schoolmaster's Assistant; and also the Practical
Navigator. In 1773 he began the annual publication of the Connecticut Almanac. He died March 9, 1818, in Groton, Conn. Daboll, Nathan, jurist, state legislator, publisher, author, was born in 1783 in Groton, Conn. He was a member of the Connecticut house of representatives in 1832-33; of the senate in 1835-36; and judge of probate in 1843-45. He was joint author of Daboll's New Arithmetic; and compiled the New England Almanac from his father's death in 1818 until his own death. He died in 1863 in Groton,

Daboll, Sherman, soldier, lecturer, jurist, was born May 18, 1844, in Rensselaer county, N.Y. He served in the civil war in the
one hundred and seventeenth regiment New York volunteers. In 1887-89 he was quartermaster-general of Michigan; and in 1889 was elected as judge of the twenty-ninth judicial circuit of Michigan. Daboll, Sherman P., lawyer, jurist. In 1899 he was judge of the twenty-ninth circuit court of Michigan at St. Johns. Dabour, John, artist, was born in 1837 in Smyrna, Asia. Fifteen years of his professional life were spent in the United States in painting portraits, which are to be found in the principal cities, but chiefly in Baltimore, Md. Among the more prominent of those that have been sitters in his studio are Archbishop Spaulding of Baltimore; Archbishop Purcell of Cincinnati Senator Cameron of Pennsylvania; Senator Davis of Vir;

and Governor Groome of Maryland.

Da Costa, Jacob Mandes, physician, author, was born Feb. 7, 1833, in the West Indies. He has been connected with Jefferson medical college since 1864; and is a specialist in diseases of the throat and lungs. In 1895 he was president of the college of physicians of Philadelphia, Pa. He was the author of Epithelial Tumors and Cancers of the Skin; The Pathological Anatomy of Acute Pneumonia; The Physicians of the Last Century; Serous Apoplexy; Medical Diagnosis; Inhalation in Treatment of Diseases of the Respiratory Passages; Strain and Over- Action of the Heart; and Harvey and his Discovery. He died in 1900 in Philadelphia, Pa. Da Costa, John C, physician, author, was born June 13, 1871, in Pottstown, Pa. In 1898-99 he was first lieutenant and assistant surgeon of the United States volunteers. He has been associate clinic of medicine in the Jefferson medical college; and has been hematologist in the German hospital at Philadelphia, Pa. He is the author of Clinic Hematology; and other medical Monographs. Da Costa, John Chalmers, surgeon, author, was born Nov. 15, 1863, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1895 he has been surgeon to the Philadelphia hospital. He is the author of A Manual of Modern Surgery. Dadd, George H., veterinary surgeon, author, was born in 1813 in England. He is the
author of The Modern Horse Doctor Manual of Veterinary Science; Anatomy and Physiology of the Horse; and The American Cat;

Dade, Francis Langhom, soldier, was born in Virginia. He was appointed third lieutenant in the twelfth infantry in 1813; became first lieutenant in 1816; captain in 1818; and brevet major in 1838. He was killed by the Indians Dec. 38, 1835, near Port King, Fla. A beautiful monument was erected at West Point to his memory and that of his command.
