He died Aug. 26, 1859. Dana, Edmund Lovell, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born Jan. 29, 1817, in Wilkesbarre, Pa. He was captain of the Wyoming artillerists; and participated in all the battles of the Mexican war. In 1862 he was major-general of Pennsylvania militia; and as colonel was in all the battles of the army of the Potomac from this time until the close of the civil war. The" command of his brigade devolved upon him at the battle of Gettysburg, in which he met and repelled the last charge of Longstreet's corps, his brigade losing more than half its entire strength. At Chaneellorsville his horse was shot under him; and he was wounded and taken prisoner. In 1865 he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He resumed his law practice and in 1867 was elected additional law judge of the eleventh district of Pennsylvania for ten years. He was president of the Wyoming historical and genealogical society. He was the author of Address before the Societies of Muhlenburg College; and Incidents in the Life of Captain Samuel H. Walker. He died April 25, 1889, in Wilkesbarre, Pa. Dana, Edmund Trowbridge, lawyer, author, was born Aug. 29, 1818, in Cambridge, Mass. He devoted special attention to Roman civil law; and to history and philosophy in their bearings upon law. Dana, Israel Thomdike, physician, founder, was born June 6, 1827, in Marblehead, Mass. He was one of the founders of the Portland school of medical instruction; and became one of the foremost physicians of New England. He died in 1904, in San Diego. Dana, James, clergyman, author, was born May 11, 1735, in Cambridge, Mass. He was an eminent congregational clergyman of New Haven. He was the author of An Examination of Edwards on the Will. He died Aug. 18, 1812, in New Haven, Conn. Dana, James Dwight, mineralogist, author, was born Feb. 12, 1813, in Utica, N.Y. He was a celebrated geologist; and professor at the Yale university from 1850. He was the author of System of R.I.

In 1776-78 and 1784 he was a delegate from Massachusetts to the continental congress and signed the articles of confederation. He was secretary of legation at Paris under John Adams. In 1785-91 he was a justice of the supreme court of Massachusetts; and was chief justice in 17911806. In 1797 he was appointed minister to France. His father was Richard A. Dana, the poet. He died April 25, 1811, in Cambridge, Mass. Dana, Francis, lawyer, author, was bom March 4, 1866, in the East Indies. He is the author of Leonora of the Yawmish; The Decoy; and other works. Dana, Herbert Caryle, clergyman, theologian was bom Sept. 25, 1864. in Pawtucket.

In 1889-97 he was librarian of the Denver public library of Denver, Col.; and since 1898 has been librarian of the city library of Springfield, Mass. Dana, John Winchester, governor, was born Jan. 21, 1808, in Fryeburg, Maine. He was the eleventh governor of Maine in 184750; and went to South America to reside in 1861. He died Dec. 23, 1867, in New Granada, South America. Dana, Joseph, clergyman, was born Nov. 3, 1743, in Pomfret, Conn.
