In 1873-82 he was librarian in the library of congress and was in charge of the Smithsonian library. In 1883-1903 he was librarian of the United States geological survey; and was also librarian of the bureau of ethnology in the Smithsonian institute.

American Revolution. Dashiell, George, clergyman, founder, was born in 1780 in Stepney, Md. He could not get episcopal orders, as he undertook to ordain ministers for what he called the Evangelical episcopal church. In this he was the forerunner of the movement, half a century later, known as the Reformed episcopal church, originated by Dr. Cummins, assistant bishop of Kentucky. Dassler, Charles F. W., lawyer, was bom April 3, 1853, in St. Louis, Mo. Since 1873 he has practiced law in Leavenworth, Kan.; has been city attorney for two terms served in the city council for two terms, and was president of the council during a part of each term. He was also president of the board of education for two terms. He is the author of Dassler's Kansas Digest; Dassler's Kansas Statutes; Kansas Form Book; and also editor and compiler of a number of other legal works. In 1879 he compiled the Statutes of Kansas, under an act of the leg;

^ Daston, Sarah, one of the later victims of the witchcraft delusion in Salem, was bom about 1613. In 1693, when the jails were full, one hundred and fifty prisoners awaited trial, and one hundred more were under accusation, the grand jury went into session and dismissed more than half the complaints. Public feeling was changing, but the party of superstition desired one conviction. The victim selected was Sarah Daston, a woman eighty years old. In February she was tried in Charlestown, but the common mind was disenthralled, and she was acquitted; while her persecutor, Minister Parria, was soon afterward driven from Salem. Daugherty, James Denny, lawyer, inventor, was born Oct. 17, 1855, in Kittanning, Pa. In 1886 he was admitted to the bar; now practices his profession; and also holds the office of referee in bankruptcy at Kittanning, Pa. He is the inventor of a type-
