Mexico. Davenport, James Sanford, educator, lawyer, mayor, congressman, was born Sept. 21, 1864, in Gaylesville, Ala. He was educated in the public schools; and at the academy at Greenbrier, Ark. Since 1893 he has practiced law in Vinita, I.T. In 1897-1901 he served two terms in the lower house of the Cherokee legislature; being speaker in the latter term. In 1899-1907 he was one of the attorneys for the Cherokee nation. In 190304 he was mayor of Vinita, I.T. In 1907-09 he was a representative from Oklahoma to the sixtieth congress as a democrat.

Davenport, John, clergyman, author, was born in 1597 in England. In 1638 he was one of the founders of New Haven; and in 1660 concealed the noted regicides, Goife and Whalley, from their pursuers. In 1666 he became pastor of the First church in Boston. He was the author of Instructions to Elders of the English Church; Catechism containing the Chief Heads of the Christian Religion; and Discourse about Civil Government in New England. He died March 15, 1670, in Boston, Mass.
