In 1892 he graduated with the degree of A.B. from Stanford university; received the degrees of A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard university; and was engaged in research work at Bonn and Naples. In 1898-1902 he was instructor in botany and in 1903-06 was assistant professor of plant morphology the university of Chicago. In 1897-1905 he was head of the department of botany at the marine biological laboratory at Woods Holl. He is a member of the American association for the advancement of science; and of the botanical society of Apiexjca. Davis, Charles Augustus, merchant, was born in 1795 in New York City. He was well versed in commercial and financial affairs, and wrote brilliantly and Intelligently upon those subjects. The Peter Scriber Letters and Major Jack Downing's Letters, first detail his interviews with President Jackson and the plans for overthrowing the United States bank. For many years his house in New York was the resort of the poet Halleck and other of the Knickerbocker writers. He died Jan. 37, 1867, in New York City. Davis, Charles Belmont, diplomat, author, was born Jan. 24, 1866, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was United States consul at Florence, Italy. He is the author of The Borderland of Society.

Davis, Charles Edward, soldier, physician, surgeon, was born in 1846 in Milan, Ohio. In 1861 he moved to Niles, Mich.; and in his seventeenth year enlisted in the twelfth Michigan volunteer infantry for three years. For awhile he was assistant in the United States field hospital. He is now a prominent physician and surgeon of Marcelliis, Mich.; and for many years was editor and proprietor of the Marcellus News. He has several times been president of Marcellus medical society; and in 1889 was a delegate to the national medical association at Nashville, Tenn. Davis, Charles Harold, painter, artist, was 7, 1856, in Amesbury, Mass. He studied art in Boston and in Paris. In 1886 he received a gold medal at the prize fund exhibition offered at the American art association of New York City; and in 1893 he was awarded a medal at the World's fair in Chicago, 111. Among his best productions are The Brook; and At Twilight.

He served fifty-four years in the navy; and became a rear-admiral for distinguished service in the civil war. He edited the American Nautical Almanac; and of Law of Deposit of Flood Tide; Geological Action of Tidal and Other Ocean Currents; and also translated Gauss's Theoria Motus C'orporum Coelestium.
