He was a major-general of militia. In 1770-88 he was a delegate from New Jersey to the continental congress. He died in July, 1807, in Elizabethtown, N.J. Dayton, Hughes, physician, author, was born May 13, 1873, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1898 he has practiced medicine in New York City. He is the author of Practice of Medicine.
Dayton, James H., naval officer, was born In 1868 he joined the United States navy; and in 1906 attained the rank of rear-admiral. In 1906-07 he commanded the Philippine squadron of the Asiatic fleet. Dayton, John, lawyer, jurist, governor, was bom in 1762. After holding several subordinate stations he was elected governor of South Carolina in 1800, and re-elected in 1808. He afterward became a judge of the United States district court of South Carolina; and held that office until his death. He was the author of A View of South Caroin Indiana.

States senator, was born Oct, 16, 1760, in Elizabethtown, N.J. In 1787-89 he was a delegate from New Jersey to the continental congress. In 1791-99 he was a representative to the second, third, fourth and fifth congresses; and in 1795-99 he was speaker of the house to the fourth and fifth congresses; and in 1799-1805 he was United States senator from New Jersey. He died Oct. 9, 1824, in Elizabethtown, N.J. Dayton, Oscar Veniah, soldier, was born in New York. In 1861 he was major in the sixty-second regiment of New York volunteer infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died Oct. 30, 1898. Dayton, William Lewis, lawyer, jurist, diplomat, congressman, United States senator, was born Feb. 17, 1807, in Baskingridge, N..J. He was a member of the state senate of New Jersey in 1837; and was an associate justice of the superior court of the state in 1838-41. In 1841-51 he was United States senator; and in 1856 was the republican candidate for vicepresident on the ticket with' J. C. Fremont. In 1857-61 he was attorney-general of New Jersey; and in 1861 was appointed a minister to France. He died Dec. 2, 1864, in Paris, France. .
Dayton, William Lewis, lawyer, jurist, was born April 13, 1839, in Trenton, N.J. He was secretary to the governor of New Jersey in 1865-68. He was president of the common council of Trenton in 1876-79; city solicitor in 1879-81; and in 1882-85 was United States minister resident at The Hague, Netherlands. In 1896 he was appointed a judge of the court of errors and appeals. He died July 28, 1897, in Trenton, N.J. Deacon, Edward, business man, genealogist, was born Dec. 19, 1839, in England. He descended from an old Bedfordshire family, founded by Richard Decons, secretary to Queen Katherine of Aragon and keeper of the King's Writs, 1460-1521. He was educated at Liverpool college. He assisted Russell Sage and Alexander Mitchell in the building of the Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad in 1866-67. He was elected director of the Consolidated rolling stock company ol Bridgeport, Conn.; and became its secretary and superintendent in 1886. In 1891-98 he was treasurer of the Fairfield county historical society; and a trustee of the P. T. Barnum institute of science and history of Bridgeport, Conn. He Is the author of The
Family of Meres and Some Early English Newspapers; Ancestors of Rodman Stoddard of Woodbury; Descent of the Family of Deacon and Allied Families. Deady, Matthew Paul, educator, lawyer, jurist, statesman, was born May 12, 1824, near Easton, Md. In 1850 he was elected to the lower house of the legislature of Oregon and in 1851 to the upper house, serving as president. In 1853-59 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of the territory and in 1859-93 he was judge of the United States district court for Oregon. In 1857 he was elected a member of the constitutional convention which formed the state constitution, and was president of that body. In 1862-64 he prepared the Codes of Criminal and Civil Procedure, and the Penal Code of the State; and in 1865 published the General Laws of the State. Dealey, George Bannerman, journalist, publisher, ne^vspaper manager, was born Sept. ]8, 1859, in Manchester, England. He was educated in the primary schools of Liverpool, England; and in
the primary and night schools of Galveston, Texas. In 1874 he became connected with the Galveston News of Texas; was manager of the Dallas News in 1885-1906; and since 1906 has been the vice-president and general manager of A. H.
