In 1837-27 and 183739 he was a representative from New York to the twentieth and twenty-flfth congresses. Died June 26, 1848, in Schenectady, N.Y. De Graff, Lawrence, educator, lawyer, public official, author, was born in 1871 near Galena, 111. In 1894 he graduated from the Dixon college with the degree of A.B.; received the degree of Ph.B. from the university of Chicago; and the degrees of LL.B.. LL.M. from the Northern Illinois college ot law. For several years he was principal of the North Dixon high school; and principal of the Galena high school. He is now a successful lawyer of Des Moines, Iowa; and assistant attorney-general of Iowa. In 18981904 he was secretary of the Highland Park college of law; and in 1903-05 was vicepresident of the Polk county republican club. He is the author of Outlines in Civics and Economics; and Iowa Laws Abridged.
De Graffeniied, Reese Calhoun, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1859 in Franklin county, Tenn. He received a common school and college education; and is also a law graduate. He came to Texas in the year 1880 and found temporary employment with the Texas and Pacific railway company. This he shortly relinquished and opened up a law office at Longview, Texas. He was elected county attorney at the following election. In 1888 he was one of the electors on the democratic ticket. In 1897-1903 he was a representative from Texas to the fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth and fifty-seventh congresses. He died Aug. 20, 1902, in Washington, D.C.
De Gress, William John, soldier, business man, diplomat, was born on Oct. 19, 1834, in Cologne, Prussia. In 1856 he enlisted in the United States army; was engaged in several Indian campaigns; served in the civil war; and in 1863-64 was on the stafl' of General J. W. Davidson. He subsequently became connected with various railroads and steamboat lines in St. Louis, Mo. In 1882 he was appointed United States consul-general to Hawaii and served about twenty years. He died Dec. 29, 1905, in Mexico. De Groat, Charles Henry, soldier, was bom inNew York. In 1862 he was captain in the thirty-second regiment Wisconsin volunteer infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died in 1904. De Groot, Albert, seaman, philanthropist, was born in 1813 on Staten Island. He promoted the erection of the Vanderbilt bronzes and presented to the printers of New York the statue of Benjamin Franklin, which stands in front of the Times and Tribune to Separate the West from the East; The buildings. Maurice Frederick Hendrick, painter, artist, was born in ]832. Among his numerous marine paintings are Farragut's Fleet Passing the Forts Below New Orleans; and The Yacht Dauntless off Dover. He died Nov. 23, 1895, in New York City.

himself to painting coast-scenery. His best known paintings are Sunrise on the Susquehanna and Fishing-Boats Off Mt, Desert. He died July 16, 1880, in Fayal, Azores.

He was active in the restoration of the state government and its final separation to form the new commonwealth of West Virginia. He is a member of the American association for the advancement of science; and a founder of the archsEological society at Washington, D.C.
