Clayton, Henry De Lamer, soldier, edulawyer, college president, was born March 9, 1827, in Pulaski county, Ga. He was a member of the state legislature. He entered the civil war as a colonel; and attained the ranks of brigadier-general and major-general. He was the ninth president of the university of Alabama.' He died in cator,
Alabama. Clayton, Henry DeLamar, lawyer, congressman, i-as born Feb. 10, 1857, in Barbour county, Ala. He practiced law at Clayton and Eufaula, Ala.; was elected presidential elector 1888, 1892; member national democratic committee since 1888. In 1897-1903 he was a representative to the fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth iifty-seventh, fifty-eighth, fiftyninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a democrat.
Clayton, Henry Helm, meteorologist, author, was born March 13, 1861, in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Since 1894 he has been meteorologist of Blue Hill meteorological observatory. He is the author of Discussions of the Cloud Observations at Blue Hill; Exploration of the Air by Means of Kites; and The
Lawrence Tornado. Clayton, John, botanist, author, was born in 1686 in England. His father was attorney-general of Virginia. He left two volumes of manuscript almost ready for the press, and marginal notes and directions for the engraver in preparing the plates for the work. He died Dec. 15, 1773, in Virginia. Clayton, John Middleton, lawyer, jurist. United States senator, was bom July 24, 1796, in Sussex county, Del. He was elected the state legislature; and subsequently secretary of the state of Delaware. In 182937, 1845-49 and 1853-57 he was United States senator. He was appointed chief justice of Delaware. In 1849-50 he was secretary of' state. During this period he negotiated the famous Clayton-B'ulwer treaty. He died Nov. 9, 1856, in Dover, Del. Clayton, John Middleton, lawyer, statesman, was born Oct. 13, 1840, in Delaware county, Ga. He received a common school education, studied at Barton's seminary in Village Green, Pa., and then read law. He was admitted to the bar, and took up the practice of his profession. In 1870-72 he was a member of the state assembly; and a member of the Arkansas state senate in
1872-74. He was selected sheriff of the county in 1876, and was re-elected five times in succession. In 1888 he was the repilblioan candidate for congress. In a contest for the seat he was shot by an unknown assassin. He died Jan. 29, 1889, in Plummerville, Ark.
Clayton, Joseph Culbertson, lawyer, pubauthor, was born June 16, 1839, in Smithfield, Va. Since 1863 he has been engaged in the practice of law. During the civil war he served in the national rittes, which was the first company in the United States sworn in under Lincoln's first call for volunteers. He still practices law in New York City. was a representative from Delaware to the fourteenth congress. In 1823-27 and 1837-47 he was United States senator. He was, at different periods a member of the Delaware legislature, chief justice of the court of common pleas, and of the superior court. He died Aug. 21, 1854, in Newcastle, Del.
