Among his noted paintings are Christ Administered to by Angels; also A Pilgrim Asleep in Sight of St. Peter's Dome; and The Beggar Girl. He died in 1844 in Rome. Devens, Charles, lawyer, jurist. In 1873In 1881-91 he served as an associate justice of the supreme court of Massachusetts. Devens, Charles, lawyer, soldier, state senator, was born April 4, 1830, in Charlestowu, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts state senate in 1848-49; and in 187781 he was attorney-general of the United States. He served through the civil war; and was made a brigadier-general in 1862. In 1873-75 he was commander-in-chief of the Grand army of the republic. He died Jan. 7, 1891, in Boston, Mass. De Vere, Mary Ainge, known as Madeline Bridges, author, poet, was born in New York. She is the author of Love Songs and Other Poems; and a second volume entitled
Poems.
De Vere, Maximilian Scheie, philologist, author, was born in 1820 in Sweden. From 1844 he was a professor in the university of Virginia. He was the author of Outlines of Comparative Philology; Studies in English; Americanisms; Wonders of the Deep; Grammar of the Spanish Language; Stray Leaves from the Book of Nature; and Romance of American History. He died about 1900 in University, Va. Devereux, Arthur Forrester, soldier, was born in Massachusetts. In 1862 he was captain in the eighth regiment Massachusetts volunteer infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Devereux, John Henry, soldier, railroad president, was born April 5, 1832, in Boston, Mass. In 1S4S he commenced life as a civil engineer on construction of the Cleveland, .
Columbus and Cincinnati railroad, and the Cleveland, Painesville and

road. In 1853 he went to Tennessee to engage in the construction of the Tennessee

He became president, until consolidation, of all the lines between Buffalo and Chicago; at which time he was made general manager of the entire lines. In 1873 he became president of the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati railroad; and also president of the Atlantic and great western railroad. road, and remained a trustee and director until his death, on March 17, 1886, in Cleveland, Ohio. Devereux, Mary, author, was born in Marblehead, Mass. He was United States district attorney for North Carolina; and in 1826 was reporter for the state supreme court. He published Reports of North Carolina Supreme Court in 1826-34; Reports in the Superior Court in 1834-40; and Equity Reports in 1826-40. He died March 24, 1869, in North Carolina. De Villiers, Charles A., soldier, was bom in 1826. He became a brigadier-general for service in the civil war. He received his discharge from the army in 1862, and returned to France. He died in France.

In 1884 he graduated from the university of West Virginia. In 1886 he was county superintendent of La Moure county, N.D.; and in 1890 was appointed state educational lecturer. In 1891 he was president of the state educational association; and has filled various other positions of trust and honor. In 1896 he was elected lieutenant-governor of North Dakota; and on the death of the governor he became governor of the state. In 1898 he was reelected lieutenant-governor of North Dakota; and in 1900 was elected to the ofBce of state superintendent of public instruction. He is prominent in the public and business affairs of Minot; and senior member of the firm of J. M. Devine and company, official abstractors of Ward county, N.D. De Vinne, Daniel, clergyman, author, was bom Feb. 1, 1793, in Ireland. He filled pastorates in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was the author of The Methodist Episcopal Church and Slavery; Recollections of Fifty Years in the Ministry; and Irish Primitive Church. He died Feb. 10, 1833, in Morrisania.
