March 21, 1882, in Sheffield, Mass. Dewey, Willis Alonzo, educator, physician, author, was bom Oct. 25, 1858, in Middlebury, Vt. In 1896 he became professor of materia medica in the Homceopathic medical college of the university of Michigan. He is the author of Essentials of Homoeopathic Materia Medica; Essentials of Homoeopathic Therapeutics; and Practical Homoeopathic Therapeutics. Dewhurst, Frederic Eli, clergyman, lecturer, author, was born April 20, 1855, in Bradford, Maine. He was pastor of Plymouth congregational church of Indianapolis, Ind.; and then filled a pastorate in (Chicago, lU! He was a lecturer in economics and sociology. He is the author of Dwellers in Tents; and Magi in the West. He died in 1906 in Chicago, 111. Dewhurst, William Whitwell, lawyer, author, was born July 3, 1850, in Greenland, N.H. In 1871 he graduated from Phillips Exeter aademy; and entered Harvard college in the class of 1875. He has been mayor of Saint Augustine, Fla.; for three terms was postmaster of that city; and was special assistant to the attorney-general of the United States. He is the author of History of Saint Augustine; and editor of Dewhurst's Kules of the United States Court. Dewing, Mrs. Maria Richards, artist, was born Oct. 27, 1S55, in New York. She has painted numerous figure and fiower pieces,
among which
are Violets; and Mother and
Child; and a Portrait of a
number of portraits, including Bay; Portrait of Her Father;
and Sleeping
Child.
Dewing, Thomas Wilmer, painter, artist, was bom May 4, 1852, in Boston, Mass. In 1888 he became a member of the national academy of design. His more important paintings are Young Sorcerer; Morning; Prelude; A Garden; The Days, which gained the Clarke prize; and Tobias and the Angel. De Witt, Alexander, manufacturer, banker, congressman, was bom April 2, 1797, in Worcester, Mass. He was a bank president; was a state senator in 1842, 1844, 1850 and 1851; and a member of the constitutional convention of 1853. In 1853-57 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the thirtythird and thirty-fourth congresses. He died in
Massachusetts.

DeWitt, Calvin, soldier, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he was captain in the forty-ninth regiment Pennsylvania infantry. In 1863 he resigned; and in 1865 received the degree of M.D. from the Jefferson medical college. In 1867 he became assistant surgeon in the United States army; in 1885 was major-surgeon; in 1898 became lieutenant-colonel in the department of the surgeon-general; and in 1901 was colonel and assistant

surgeon-general. In 1903 he was retired with the rank of brigadier-general United States army. He died Sept. 3, 1908, in Fort Yellowstone, Wyo. De Witt, Charles, congressman, was bom in 1728 in Kingston, N.Y. In 1783-85 he was a, delegate from New York to the continental congress. He died Sept. 12, 1787, in Kingston, N.Y.
De Witt, Charles G., congressman, diplomat, was born in 1802 in Newburg, N.Y. In 1829-31 he was a representative from New York
to the twenty-first congress,
and was
appointed charge d'affaires for Central America in 1833. He died April 13, 1839, in Newburg, N.Y. De Witt, David Miller, lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 25, 1837, in faterson, N.J. He was elected district attorney of Ulster county in 1862, and re-elected in 1865. In 1873-75 he was a representative from New York to the forty-third congress. De Witt, David Porter, soldier, was bom in New York. In 1862 he was colonel in the third regiment Maryland volunteer infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers.

De Witt, Francis B., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born March 11, 1849, in Jackson county, Ind. He enlisted in the fortysixth Ohio regiment at the age of twelve, and served at the battle of Shiloh and during the Corinth campaign. In 1891-95 he represented Paulding county in the Ohio legislature. In 1895-97 he was a representative to the fifty-fourth congress as a republican. De Witt, Jacob H., state legislator, congressman, was born in 1784 in Ulster county, N.Y. In 1819-21 he was a representative from New York to the. sixteenth congress; and was a member of the New York assembly in 1839 and in 1847. He died Jan. 30, 1857, in Kingston, N.Y. De Witt, John, clergyman, educator, was born in August, 1789, in Catskill, N.Y. In 1825-31 he held the professorship of belleslettres, criticism and logic in Rutgers college. He died Oct. 11, 1831, in New Brunswick, N.J. De Witt, John, clergyman, author, was born Nov. 29, 1821, in Albany, N.Y.
