peace eighteen years; was state's attorney for Washington county in 1835-38; and was a member of the constitutional convention in 1836 and 1837. He was a representative to the general assembly six years; state senator in 1841-42; and in 1843-47 he was a representative to the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth congresses. He was the twenty-fifth governor of Vermont in 1865-67. He died July 26, 1891, in Vermont. Dillingham, William Paul, lawyer, legislabanker, governor. United States senator, was born on Dec. 13, 1843, in Waterbury ,Vt. In 1876 and 1884 he was a member of the Vermont state legislature; was state senator in 1878-80; and was commissioner of state taxes in 1882-88. In 1888-90 he was the thirty-seventh governor of Vermont. Since 1890 he has been president of the Waterbury national bank. In 1901 he was elected a member of the United States senate for the terms ending in 1915.

DiUman, Frederick, artist, was born Dec. Germany. In childhood he came to the United States; was educated at Calvert college, Md., and studied art in the Royal academy of Munich. He was secretary 25, 1847, in
of the international board of jury for fine arts at the World's Columbian exposition; and in 1899-1900 was president National academy of design. Two of his mural decorations, in mosaic, are in the new congressional library, Washington, D.C.
Dillman, Willard, author, poet, was bom in 1872 in Minnesota. He is a writer of Revillo, S.D. He is the author of Across the Wheat, a book of verse. Dillon, John Brown, historian, author, was bom in 1800 in West Virginia. He was the author of History of Indiana; Notes on Historical Evidence in Preference to Adverse Theories of the Origin and Nature of the Government of the United States. He died in 1879. Dillon,
John Forrest, lawyer, jurist, author, was born on Dec. 25, 1831, in Washington coiuity, N.Y. In 1858-66 he was judge of the seventh judicial district of Io*a; in 1864-68 was associate justice of the supreme court of Iowa; in 1868 became chief justice; and in 1869 was commissioned United States circuit judge for the eighth judicial circuit. Since 1879 he has resided in New York City. He is the author of United States Circuit Court Reports; Municipal Corporations; Removal of Causes from State to Federal Courts; Municipal Bonds; and Laws and Jurisprudence of England and America. Dillon, Mrs. Mary C, litterateur, author, was born in Carlisle, Pa. She is the author of The Rose of Old St. Louis; In Old Bellaire; and The Leader.

Dillon, Sidney, railroad president, was born 7, 1812, in Northampton, N.Y. He was twice president, at intervals, of the Union pacific railroad. He died June 9, 1892, in New York City.

Dillwyn, George, clergyman, author, was born Feb. 26, 1738, in Philadelphia, Pa. He became a Quaker preacher; and in this capacity visited the southern states. He was the author of Dillwyn's Reflections. He died June 23, 1821.
Dilworth, Caleb J., soldier, lawyer, was born in 1820. During the civil war he attained the rank of brigadier-general. He subsequently became attorney-general of Nebraska. He died Feb. 3, 1900, in Omaha, Neb. Diman, Byron, manufacturer, state senator, governor, was bom in 1795 in Bristol, R.I. He was for many years either a state senator or a member of the lower house of Rhode Island; and was three years. In teenth governor Aug. 1, 1865, in
the lieutenant-governor for 1846-47 he was the fourof Rhode Island. He died Bristol, R.I.
Diman, Jeremiah Lewis, educator, clergyman, author, was born May 1, 1831, in Bristol, R.I. He was a congregational clergyman; and was professor of history and political economy in Brown university from 1864. He was the author of Orations and Essays; The Theistic Argument as Affected by Recent Theories.

Diman, John Byron, educator, clergyman, was born May 24, 1863, in Brookline, Mass. In 1888-93 he filled a pastorate in Middletown, R.I. In 1892-95 he was a founder,
teacher in the university grammar school at Providence, R.I. In 1896 he established a boarding school for boys at Newport, R.I., which developed into St. George's school of
Middletown, of which he is headmaster. Dimick, Justin, soldier, was bom Aug. 5, 1800, in Hartford county, Conn. He served during the civil war; and in 1865 received the brevet of brigadier-general in the United States army. In 1864-71 he was governor of the Soldiers' home, near Washington, D.C. He died Oct. 13, 1871, in Washington, D.C. Dimitry, Alexander, scholar, educator, diplomat, was born Feb. 7, 1805, in New Orleans, La. In 1847-48 he organized the free school system in Louisiana; and for three years was state superintendent of public instruction. During 1859-61 he was United States minister resident to the republics of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Under the confederate government he was chief of the finance bureau in the postoffioe department. In 1870 he was elected professor of ancient languages in the Christian brothers college
He died Jan. 30, 1883. Dimitry, Charles Patton, soldier, journalist, author, was born July 31, 1837, in Washington, D.C. During the civil war he served in the confederate army as a private in the Louisiana Guards. Since the war he has been connected with the press of Baltimore, Washof Mississippi.
