Dudley, James Benson, educator, college was born Nov. 2, 1859, in Wilmington, N.C. In 1880-96 he was principal of the Peabody school at Wilmington, N.C. Since 1898 he has been president of the agricultural and mechanical college at Greenboro, N.C. Dudley, Joseph, colonial governor, was born Sept. 23, 1647, in Roxbury, Mass. In 167781 he was one of the commissioners for the united colonies. In 1686-87 and 1702-16 he was colonial governor of Massachusetts; in 1686-87 and 1716-28 colonial governor of New Hampshire, and in 1692 colonial governor of New York. In 1687 he was appointed president,

chief justice of the superior court; and was made chief justice of New York in 1690. He died April 2, 1720, in Roxbury, Mass.

Dudley, Mrs. Lucy Brownson, author, musician, was born May 1, 1848, in Peninsula, Ohio. As an organist she received by Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales in Windsor castle in 1895; and has spent twenty-four years in the dynagraph and track indicator ear, traveling all over the United States. She is the author of Contributions to the Knowledge of the Semites; Letters to Ruth; and

He was engaged in mercantile pursuits until 1855; and was then commissioned first lieutenant in the tenth regiment United States infantry. He served in the of 1857. in command at the battle of Baton Rouge in 1862. During the civil war he was first colonel of volunteers, and was constantly in command of brigades or divisions of infan-

try or cavalry; and was brevetted five times for gallant and meritorious services. In 1889 he was retired as a brigadier-general;

and now resides in Roxbury, Mass. He was president of the for three years;

historical society vice-president of the Joseph Warren monument association; has been president of the army and navy union association. Dudley, Paul, lawyer, jurist, was born Sept. 3, 1675. In 1745 he became chief justice of Massachusetts; and represented Roxbury for several years in the state legislature. He died January, 1751, in Roxbury, Mass. Dudley, Pemberton, educator, physician, was born Oct. 17, 1837, in Philadelphta, Pa. He is professor of institutes of medicine and hygiene in Hahnemann college; and in 18961907 was dean. He was editor of the Hahnemannian Monthly for eight years. He died in 1907 in Philadelphia, Pa. Dudley, Plimmon Henry, civil engineer, designer, inventor, was born May 21, 1843, in Freedom, Ohio. In 1883 he designed the firstflve-inch steel rail used in the United States. He is the inventor of the dynagraph, the track indicator and other railroad devices. is

Dudley, Thomas, colonial governor, was born in 1576 in England. In 1630 he came to Massachusetts; and in 1634-35, 1640-41 and 1650-51 was colonial governor of Massachusetts. He died July 31, 1652, in Roxbury, Mass. Dudley, Thomas Underwood, soldier, clergyman, bishop, author, was born Sept. 26, 1837, in Richmond, Va. He served in the confederate army as a colonel, and afterwards entered the ministry. In 1875 he was consecrated the second protestant episcopal bishop of Kentucky. He was the author of A Wise Discrimination the Church's Need; and A Sunday School Question Book. He died in 1904 in Louisville, Ky. Dudley, William Henry, physician, curator, was born Oct. 7, 1811, in Ireland. In 1851 he was elected curator of the New York medical college, and held that office for several years. He died Oct. 9, 1886, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dudley, William Lofland, chemist, was born April 16, 1859, in Covington, Ky. In 1886 he became professor of chemistry in Vanderbilt university of Nashville; and became dean of the medical department in 1895. The electro-metallurgy of iridium has been principally developed through his work. He has pviblished scientific papers in various journals, and wrote the article Iridium, in Mineral Resources of the United States.
