New Orleans and was elected state senator; was afterward appointed United States district attorney for Louisiana; and then became attorney-general of the state. He died Feb. 4, 1882, in Washington, D.C. Durbin, Elisha J., missionary, founder, was born in 1800 in Madison county, Ky. During fifty years of his missionary labors his horse-back journeys averaged two hundred miles a week. He himself estimates that during sixty-two years he travelled over five hundred thousand miles. He erected the church of St. Gerome in Graves county in 1836, that of the Sacred Heart of Morganfield in 1855; and St. Agnes's church of Uniontown in 1860. He died in Bardstown, Ky. Durbin, John Price, clergyman, author, was born in 1800 in Bourbon county, Ky. He
was missionary secretary
of the methodist episcopal church in 1850-72. He was the author of Observations in Europe; and Observations in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. He died in 1876. Durbin, Winfield Taylor, soldier, manufacturer, governor, was born May 4, 1847, in Lawreneeburg, Ind. In 1869-79 he traveled for a wholesale dry goods firm of Indianapolis, Ind. He then engaged in business in Anderson, Ind.; and has attained success as a manufacturer and banker. During the Spanish-American war he served as colonel in the one hundred and sixty-first regiment Indiana volunteer infantry. In 1901-05 he was governor of Indiana. Durborow, Allan Cathcart, merchant, congressman, was born Nov. 10, 1857, in Philadelphia, Pa. He is in businesss in Chicago, 111. In 1891-95 he was a representative from Illinois to the fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. He died in 1908 in Chicago, 111. Durell, Daniel M., lawyer, congressman, was born in 1769 in Massachusetts. In 180709 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the tenth congress, and held the post of United States district attorney in 1830-34. Died in 1841 in New Hampshire. Durell, Edward Henry, lawyer, jurist, was born July 14, 1810, in Portsmouth, N.H. He was president of the constitutional convention of Louisiana; was mayor of New Orleans; and in 1863 was appointed United States judge for the district of Louisiana. He died' March 29, 1887, in New Orleans, La. Du Relle, George, lawyer, jurist, was born Oct. 18, 1852, in York, iST.Y. In 1882-86 and 1889-91 he was United States attorney for Kentucky. Since 1895 he has been judge of the court of appeals of Kentucky.

Bradford Matthew Chaloner, merchant, philanthropist, was born June 15, 1843, in Fall River, Mass. Durfee hall, one of the finest college dormitories in the United States, was his gift to Yale. He died Sept. 13, 1872, in Fall River, Mass. Durfee, Job, lawyer, jurist, congressman, author, was born Sept. 20, 1790, in Tiverton, R.I. In 1833-35 he was associate justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island; in 183548 was chief justice; and for many years was a member of the state legislature, and speaker of the house. In 1821-25 he was a representative from Rhode Island to the seventeenth and eighteenth congresses. He was the author of Roger Williams in Exile; and Panidea, a philosophical treatise. He died July 26, 1847, in Tiverton, R. I. Durfee, Nathaniel B., agriculturist, congressman, was born Sept. 29, 1812, in Tiverton, R.I. He represented the town of Warwick several years in the Rhode Island state legislature; and the town of Tiverton fou» years. In 1855-59 he was a representative from Rhode Island to the thirty-fourth and thirty-fifth congresses. He died Nov. 12, 1872, in Tiverton, R.I. In 1863-65 he was a member of the Rhode Island legislature; and of the state senate in 1865. In 1865-75 he was an associate-justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island; and was chief justice in 1875-91, when he retired. He was the author of Treatise on the Law of Highways; The Village Picnic and Other Poems; Gleanings from the Judicial History of Rhode Island; and Some Thoughts on the Constitution of Rhode Island. He died in 1901 in Providence, R.I. Durfee, William Franklin, engineer, was born Nov. 15, 1833, in New Bedford, Mass. In 1853 he became an engineer and architect in his native town; and for five years held the appointment of city surveyor. He was chosen as one of the representatives of New Bedford in the state legislature of 1861. He equipped at Wyandotte, Mich., the first analytical laboratory built as an adjunct to steel works in the United States. He died in jurist,
