Clingman, Thomas Lanier, soldier, lawyer, congressman, author, was born July 37, 1812, in Huntsville, N.C. He was a, member of the state senate of North Carolina. In 1843-59 he was a representative to the twenty-eighth to the tlurty-fifth congresses. In 1857-61 he was United States senator. He made contributions to the science of geology and mineralogy, and brought to light many facts connected with the mountains of North Carolina, one of the highest peaks of which it was his fortune to explore and measure, and which now bears his name. He was the author of Speeches, and Follies of the Positivist Philosophers. He died Nov. 3, 1897, in Raleigh, N.C. Clinton, Alexander james, insurance president, inventor, was born Sept. 23, 1825, in Canterbury, N.Y, In 1876 he became president of the Eagle insurance company of New York. In 1855-63 he served in the New York national guard. Clinton, Charles William, designer, architect, was born in 1838 in New York City. For many years he has been an eminent architect of New York City; and senior member of the firm of Clinton and Russell. He was architect of the Mutual life insurance company; Seventh regiment armory, in Pennsylvania.

In 1889 he founded the African methodist episcopal Zion Quarterly Review, arid edited it for two years. In 1896 he was elected bishop. He is the author of The Three Alarm Cries; and other works.
