In 1867 he became connected with the marine department of the Fireman's fund insurance company of San Francisco, Cal.; and since 1900 has been its president. Duval, Gabriel, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 6, 1752, in Prince George county, Md. In 1793-94 he was a representative from Maryland to the third and fourth congresses. He was a presidential elector in 1796 and 1800; comptroller of the United States treasury in 1802; and in 1811-36 was an associate justice of the supreme court of the United States. He died March 6, 1844, in Prince George county, Md. Duval, Henry Rieman, railroad president, was born Oct. 17, 1842, in Baltimore, Md. He was receiver of the Florida railway navigation company in 1885-89; and when the property of that company passed to the Florida central and Peninsular railroad company, he became its president. Duval, Isaac Harding, soldier, state senator, congressman, was born Sept. 1, 1824, in Wellsburg, Va. He entered the volunteer army from Virginia in 1861 as a major; and was brevetted a major-general. He served two years in the state senate of West Virginia; two years as adjutant-general of the state; and in 1869-71 was a representative from West Virginia to the forty-first congress as a republican. He died in 1903 in Wellsburg, W.Va. Duval, John Pope, soldier, lawyer, author, was born June 3, 1790, in Richmond, Va. He served as a first lieutenant in the war of 1812; and was promoted to captain in 1814. He served with the rank of brigadier-general in the Texan service; and then returned to He Florida as secretary of the territory. was the author of a Digest of the Laws of Florida. He died about 1855 in Florida. Duval, Thomas H., jurist, was born in Virginia. He moved to Texas, and settled at Austin; and in 1857 was appointed United States judge for the western district of Texas. He died in Austin, Texas. Duval, William P., soldier, lawyer, congressman, governor, was born in 1784 in Virginia. Duvall, William Penn, soldier, was born Jan. 13, 1847, in St. Mary's county, Md. In 1869 he was second lieutenant in the fifth regiment United States artillery; and in 1901 was honorably mustered out of volunteer service. In 1906 he was commissioned brigadier-general; and in 1907 was made major-general.

Duveneck, Frank, painter, artist, was born about 1845 in Covington, Ky. He sent five portraits to the Boston art club in 1875; and has since attained high rank as a successful artist. Since 1881 has lived almost continuously at Florence, Italy, painting and teaching. D'vys, George Whitefield, composer, author, was born March 16, 1860, in East Boston, Mass. He composed the songs Casey at the Bat; Old Dan; and Sail On Sailor Boy. He is the author of Runt Osgood, a Tale of

Adventure; and The Fiji's Mate. Duyckinck, Evert Augustus, author, was born Nov. 23, 1816, in New York City. In 1840 he founded a magazine entitled Arcturus. In 1847 he was editor of

The Literary

World, a weekly review of books, fine arts, etc., which was edited until 1854. He was a literary critic of New York City; and

with

his brother George, Avas the author of an Encyclopaedia of American Literature, first issued in

1855. Other works by elder Duyckinck are History of the War for the Union; and Biography of Eminent Men

and Women of Europe and America National Gallery of Eminent Americans; memoirs of authors; Memorials of John Allan; and other works. He died in 1878 in New York

City.

Dwenger, Joseph, clergyman, bishop, was born in 1837 in St. John's, Ohio. He was a clergyman of Wapakoneta, Ohio; and subsequently became a bishop of the Roman catholic church. He died Jan. 33, 1893, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Dwight, Benjamin Woodbridge, educator, author, was born April 5, 1816, in New Haven, Conn. He was the author of The Higher Christian Education; Modern Philosophy; Modern Philology Woman's Higher Culture, The True Doctrine of Divine Providence; History of the Dwight Family in America; and History of the Strong Family. He died in 1889 in New York City.
