Eaton, George Howard, banker, state senwas born March 14, 1848, in Milltown, N.B. In 1866 he graduated from Phillips academy of Andover, Mass.; and in 1870 graduated from Amherst college of Massachusetts. For many years he was president ator,
of the Calais national bank; and is now president of the International trust and banking company. He is a trustee of the Bangor theological seminary; and a trustee of the library of Calais, Maine. In 1901-04 he served two terms as a representative in the Maine state legislature; and in 1906-07 he was a member of the Maine state senate.

N.Y. Eaton, John, soldier, educator, journalist, author, was bom Dee. 5, 1829, in Sutton, N.H. He was commissioned a colonel in the volunteer service; and brevetted a general. He established and edited the Daily Post at Memphis, Tenn.; and in 1870 was appointed United States commissioner of education. In 1895 he became president of the
Sheldon Jackson college.
In 1898 he was
inspector of education for Porto Rico. He was the author of History of Thetford acad-
emy; Mormons of To-day; The Freedmen in the War; and Schools of Tennessee. He died in 1906 in Washington, D.C. Eaton, John Henry, governor. United States senator, author, was born in 1790 in Tennessee. In 1817-31 he was United States senator from Tennessee, and in 1829-31 he was secretary of war. In 1834-36 he was governor of the territory of Florida; and in 1836-40 was minister plenipotentiary to Spain. He was the author of a Life of Andrew Jackson. He died Nov. 17, 1856, in Washington, D.C.
Eaton, Joseph
Giles, naval oflBcer, was Jan. 29, 1847, in Greenville, Ala. In 1861 he was a midshipman in the United States navy; and in 1901 became captain. He commanded the Enterprise, Resolute, Chesapeake, Oregon and Massachusetts. He received a medal of honor for services in the Spanish-American war. In 1905 he was retired with the rank of rear-admiral. Eaton, Joseph Oriel, painter, artist, was born Feb. 8, 1829, in Licking county, Ohio. He was an effective genre and portrait painter, both in oil and water colors. He exhibited at the national academy Landscape View on the Hudson; and Moral Instruction. He died Feb. 7, 1875, in Yonkera, N.Y.
