He died July 4, 1885, in Mansfield, La. Elbert, Samuel, soldier, colonial governor, was bom in 1743, in Prince William parish, He served in the revolutionary war; S.C. and attained the rank of brigadier-general. In 1785-86 he was colonial governor of Georgia. He died Nov. 2, 1788, in Savannah, Ga. Elbert, Samuel Hitt, state legislator, governor, was born April 3, 1833, in Logan' county, Ohio. In 1869 he was elected to the Colorado state legislature; and in 1873-74 was governor of Colorado. He died Nov. 27, 1899, in Galveston, Texas. Elder, Cyrus, author, poet, was bom June 16, 1833, in Somerset, Pa. He was a revenue commissioner of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Dream of a Free-Trade Paradise; Man and Labor; Short Studies; and My Gift, a volume of poems. Elder, George A. M., priest, college president, author, was bom in 1794, in Hardin's Creek, Ky. He was a Roman catholic priest; and founded the college of St. Joseph at Bardstown, Ky., and was its first president. He was the author of Letters to Brother Jonathan; and other works. He died in 1838 in
Bardstown, Ky.
Elder, John, clergyman, was bom Jan. 26, 1706, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He trained his parishioners for cavalry service against the Indians; and afterward received a colonel's commission from the proprietaries and had charge of the block-houses from Easton to the Susquehanna. He was pastor of presbyterian church during 1738-92. He died July 17, 1792, near Harrisburg, Pa. Elder, Rufus C, lawyer, bank director, was born March 29, 1854, in Lewistown, Pa.

City; and since 18flO has been pastor of the Calvary baptist church of Albany, N.Y. In 1885 he became president of the New York baptist city mission. Elder, Mrs. Susan Blanchard, educator, author, was born April 19, 1835, in Fort Jessup, La. After the war she became professor of natural science in the New Orleans high school; and editor of the Morning Star. She is the author of The Loss of the Papacy; James the Second; Savonarola; and Ellen Fitzgerald, a southern tale. Elder, William, physician, author, was born July 23, 1806, in Somerset, Pa. He was prominent as an abolitionist. He was the author of Periscopics, a volume of miscellanies; The Enchanted Beauty; The Life of Dr. Kane; The Debt and Resources of the United States; Questions of the Day, Economic and Social; and Conversations on the Principal Subjects of Political Economy. He died April, 5, 1885, in Philadelphia, Pa. Elder, William Henry, clergyman, bishop,
was bora March 22, 1819, in Baltimore, Md. He was made a Roman catholic bishop in 1857; beginning his active duties in charge of the see of Natchez. In 1880 he was nominated coadjutor bishop of Cincinnati; and in 1883 became archbishop. He died Oct. 31, 1904, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Elderkin, John, journalist, author, was born Feb. 22, 1841, in Setauket, N.Y. In 1868-72 he was editor of the American Booksellers Guide; and since 1856 has been on the editorial staff of the New York Ledger. He is the author of Turf and Trotting Horse of America; Brief History of the Lotos Club; and John Elderkin, One of the Founders of Connecticut. Eldred, Nathaniel B., congressman, was born in 1795 in Orange county, N.Y. He was a representative in congress from Pennsylvania in 1822-28. He was for a time canal
commissioner of Pennsylvania; and naval officer at Philadelphia in 1852-56. Jan. 27, 1867, in Bethany, Pa.

Eldredge, Barnabas, manufacturer, business president, was born June 19, 1843, in Munson, Ohio. In 1879 the Eldredge manufacturing company was organized, and he was chosen its first president. In 1886 the company was consolidated with the National sewing machine company; and the two corporations removed from Chicago to Belvidere, 111., where they built a large plant for the manufacture of their machines. Eldredge, Nathaniel B., soldier, physician,
lawyer, congressman, was born March 28, 1813, in Auburn, N.Y. He was a member of the Michigan state senate in 1848 and judge of probate in 1852-56. In 1861 he raised a company of volunteers and joined the seventh Michigan infantry; and became a lieutenant colonel in 1862. In 1865 he removed to Adrian, Mich.; and was elected mayor in 1870.
